Artist's Bio: Bujo, a percussionist and leader in the ancient future mode, is heavily steeped in the ancestral spiritual traditions of the drum, while at the same time, thoroughly modern in his approach to music. A native of Englewood, New Jersey, Jones grew up in a household immersed in jazz, from Charlie Parker and Grant Green to John Coltrane, along with the pop and R&B legends of the times. Jones traces his percussion expertise to the age-old 'academy of the streets.' Over the years he has evolved an increasingly comprehensive approach to his instruments, commanding respect on stages ranging from the Isley Brothers to Whitney Houston to Winard Harper to such intricate avant jazz legends as Reggie Workman.

Bio:Rebelution first united in Santa Barbara, California, built from a wide array of musical backgrounds. With Reggae as the focus, the group set out to create a fresh and vibrant sound which they dub "California Reggae." The band released their highly anticipated full-length album in June of 2007 and just weeks after its release, Courage to Grow became one of the most downloaded Reggae albums on iTunes. By the end of the year, it had been awarded the iTunes Editors Choice: Best Reggae Album 2007.

"Apparently, California Reggae is hot. Stemming from a foundation of local support, Rebelution soared into iTunes Reggae Top 10 (album downloads), amongst some lofty company. Lofty like Bob, Stephen, and Damian Marley." -- Santa Barbara News-Press

Rebelutions dynamic sound is led by diverse vocalist and guitarist Eric Rachmany. Together with the elevating melodies of Rory Carey keyboards and hard-hitting beats by bass player Marley D. Williams and drummer Wesley Finley, the band will make you move both physically and mentally.

"If you love Bob Marley, Sublime, and Jack Johnson and you're a regular on the State Street scene, then chances are you'e already crazy about Rebelution. Their combination of reggae, hip-hop, and rock have made them a favorite of music lovers all over town." -- The Santa Barbara Independent

Within the last year, Rebelution has made a name for themselves with their iTunes success and performances with notable artists like Barrington Levy, Israel Vibration, Junior Reid, Don Carlos, Pepper, Eek-A-Mouse, Pato Banton, Tanya Stephens, Half Pint, SOJA, Yellowman, Talib Kweli, E-40, and The Pharcyde. Rebelution has already proven themselves in the musical arena and intends to further expand their success with a sound that confidently claims itself unique.

Festival Website: http://afrofunk.org

Afrobeat is dense, funky, intricately-layered, groove-heavy music with an intrinsic message – delivered through polyrhythmic beats, the sweat of the dancers, and the power of words. This July, that message will reverberate through California, when the Afrofunk Festival returns after three consecutive years of sold-out shows.

The Afrofunk Festival was born in 2005, when Kenyan singer Victor Sila joined forces with Liberian DJ Jeremiah Kpoh. Cresting the wave of the international Afrobeat revival, which shined a media spotlight on bands like Antibalas and artists like Femi Kuti, the AFF tapped into the vibrancy of the San Francisco Bay Area, the epicenter of the ‘80s World Beat craze and current home to bands like Albino, Kotoja, Aphrodesia, and Sila’s own outfit, the Afro-Funk Experience. The result was a truly unique event with a righteous, humanitarian cause benefiting at-risk youth in famine- and war-torn regions of East Africa.

In the years since, Afrobeat has continued to grow in popularity, while the AFF has become a cultural institution -- not just in the San Francisco Bay Area, but along the West Coast. Now in its fourth year, the AFF (which runs July 9-26) has expanded to venues in Eugene, Seattle, Portland, Ashland, San Luis Obispo, San Diego, Los Angeles, and Santa Barbara. The AFF tour concludes with three consecutive nights at SF’San Francisco's premier live music club, the Independent.

“There’s no way we can stop doing the Afrofunk Festival, as long as the crisis facing children in Africa continues,” says Sila, emphasizing that his mission has always been to raise cultural and social awareness through music.

This year’s lineup stretches the boundaries of Afrofunk, presenting African, Afro-Brazilian and Afro-Latin variants, alongside nu-funk and classic soul. Performers include Sila and the Afrofunk Experience, B-Side Players, Darondo, Nino Moschella, Bayonics, DJ Vanka, Afrobeat Down, Fuga, Rocky Dawuni, Manicato, DJ Felina, Sambada, and DJ Jeremiah with Afrobeat Nation. (Visit http://www.afrofunk.org for a complete list of performers, dates, and venues.)

The Afrofunk Festival is still a party, so bring your dancing shoes, but this is a party with a conscience – and a cause (proceeds will go to House of Hope, an orphanage in Africa that houses children ravaged by famine and disease). Despite international media attention and critically-acclaimed documentaries like Peter Jordan’s Darfur Rising which have increased awareness about the plight of African children, the situation remains grave.

Having spent time in a refugee camp as a youth himself before coming to America, DJ Jeremiah is particularly sympathetic to the struggles of Africa’s children. “This is the best way I know of to focus attention on this important issue. The youth are the future. By helping them, we are giving them the hope for a better life,” he says, adding, “what better medium to get this message across than Afrofunk?”

Bio: AHIMSA* the music group: During one of his concert tours in Germany Neyveli S.Radhakrishna , a reputed South Indian Violinist, based in Chennai chanced upon Matthias muller, a Jazz and pop guitarist who had a stint in Chennai, learning Veena.(an ancient Indian stringed instrument) Fascinated by Carnatic music, Matthias muller had a burning desire to form a music group along with Indian Musicians. Radhakrishna had similar passion for a long time.
The chance meeting blossomed in to friendship and mutual admiration. Thus was born the music group "AHIMSA" with five musicians. (on the auspicious Vijayadasami day 19.10.1999)
Radhakrishna and Muller recorded their the first CD in Germany partnering Armin Metz on (bass guitar), R.Yogaraja on percussion and A.S.Shankar on Ghatam (clay pot). The CD has received wide acclaim all over Europe.
There is vast scope for improvisation in both Jazz and Indian music. Presentation of enchanting, daring, and technically proficient improvisational music is the forte of AHIMSA.
Discerning critics acknowledge that after "Shakti" the blend of violin and guitar with an additional bonus of Bass guitar is unique to "Ahimsa" which is charting its own distinct course in the mosaic of world music.
* "AHIMSA" in Sanskrit denotes non-violence, compassion, love and reverence for all beings, every form of life.

Tribo De Jah

Unique"! This is the word most commonly heard when people express their first impression about Tribo de Jah. We still could add"intense", "rare" and many different qualifications to this original Brazilian group. Only who watches them performing could describe the impressive magnetism they express on stage. One very peculiar detail about them is that 5 of the 6 members of the group are blind (one partially and the other four totally). They met each other at the School for the Blind from Sao Luis, capital of the state of Maranhao, in northern Brazil, called the Brazilian Jamaica. Some years later the five met vocalist and broadcaster Fauzi Beydoun, born in Sao Paulo but at that moment returning to Brazil from Ivory Coast, Africa, with the reggae rhythm pounding in his heart. The group then started to mix its 'roots reggae' music with strong political messages, social enlightenment and spiritual love and peace. The band performs a version of reggae that differs from the original Jamaican style, as they use elements of their native Brazilian culture, on what is now lovingly referred to as "Brazilian reggae".

BIO: Marcus Mosiah Garvey, one of the greatest leaders African people have produced, was born August 17, 1887 in St. Ann's Bay, Jamaica, and spent his entire life in the service of his people--African people. He was bold; he was uncompromising and he was one of the most powerful orators on record. He could literally bring his audiences to a state of mass hysteria. Garvey emphasized racial pride. His goal was nothing less that the total and complete redemption and liberation of African people around the planet. His dream was the galvanization of Black people into an unrelenting steamroller that could never be defeated. I consider myself, along with many others, as one of Garvey's children.

As a young man of fourteen, Garvey left school and worked as a printer's apprentice. He participated in Jamaica's earliest nationalist organizations, traveled throughout Central America, and spent time in London, England, where he worked with the Sudanese-Egyptian nationalist Duse Mohamed Ali. In 1916 Garvey was invited by Booker T. Washington to come to the United States in the hopes of establishing an industrial training school, but arrived just after Washington died. In March 1916, shortly after landing in America, Garvey embarked upon an extended period of travel. When he finally settled down, he organized a chapter of the Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League. The UNIA & ACL had been formed in Jamaica in 1914. Its motto was "One God, One Aim, One Destiny," and pledged itself to the redemption of Africa and the uplift of Black people everywhere. It aimed at race pride, self-reliance and economic independence.

Within a few years Garvey had become the best-known and most dynamic African leader in the Western Hemisphere and perhaps the entire world. In 1919 Mr. Garvey created an international shipping company called the Black Star Line. By 1920 the UNIA had hundreds of divisions. It hosted elaborate international conventions and published a weekly newspaper entitled the Negro World.

No other organization in modern times has had the prestige and the impact as the UNIA & ACL. During the 1920s UNIA divisions existed throughout North, South and Central America, the Caribbean, Africa, Europe and Australia.

Prezident Brown

Prezident Brown (born: Fitz Albert Cotterell) has been called "one of the most interesting cultural dee-jays since U Roy". Emphasizing positive messages, Brown has continued to pioneer his own direction, developing his own approach to dee-jaying that he calls, "the chanting stylee". Born to a Seventh Day Adventist family in Colonel Ridge, Clarendon, Brown grew up in St. Mary, a small town in the the north coast resort city of Ocrabessa. Although he showed potential as an artist, as a youngster, he was forced to leave school in order to support his mother and three sisters after the death of his father. Brown launched his musical career, at the age of fourteen, when he began dee-jaying for the Sound King Stereo Mix at the Bamboo lounge. Initially known as Junior Ranking, Brown was dubbed "Slim Brown" by dee-jay Nicodemus. When he recorded his debut single, a duet with Chinna, in1988, Brown was named "Dancehall Doctor". The title "Prezident" was bestowed upon him by the late Jack Ruby, producer of Burning Spear's albums, ""Marcus Garvey" and "Man In The Hills". With Ruby overseeing his recordings, Brown enjoyed such hits as "Rough Road", "Brain Food" and "Roots In The Music". Following Ruby's death in 1988, Brown became involved with producers Collins, O'Hare and Stewart of Grove Music. He switched to Cole's label, Roof International, shortly afterwards, and began performing and emceeing at the Rooftop Club. His most successful period came after resuming his partnership with O'Hare in 1989. In 1995, Brown toured the United Kingdom, promoting his debut album, "Big Bad And Talented. ~ Craig Harris, All Music Guide

Rootz Underground

The group performed live for five years before beginning the recording process for their debut release MOVEMENT. The band has had the opportunity to perform at such Jamaican festivals such as Reggae Sumfest, Welcome To Jamrock, the Air Jamaica Jazz & Blues Festival and Flashpoint Film Festival.

Alika, an Argentinian who has become one of the most prominent women in Latin reggae, started out in a hardcore hip-hop band, Actitud Maria Marta, which she left for rastafari enlightenment. She has released a couple of albums with her band Nueva Alianza, including the most recent, "Razon Meditacion Accion."

Quinto Sol Quinto Sol takes you on a world beat tour unlike any reggae band in the music circuit. Formed in the artist/activist community of East Los Angeles, the group of musicians is known for their emotion and sound that is deeply rooted in community and roots music.

Quinto Sol uses lyrics and live performances as a tool to spread awareness of socio-political and economic issues facing their communities. YouTube Clips of the Mighty Diamonds

Mighty Diamonds Website

The Mighty Diamonds, Donald “Tabby” Shaw, Fitzroy ”Bunny” Simpson and Lloyd “ Judge” Ferguson formed in

1969 in the Trenchtown area of Kingston, Jamaica and for the past 32 years have been entertaining and educating the world with their sweet harmonies and conscious lyrics.

They quickly became known as the young group with the Motown sound with their soulful harmonies and polished performances. They first hit singles “ Country Living” and “ Hey Girl” were recorded on the Channel One label. Their debut album “ Right Time”, released on the Virgin has become a classic. This is an album that belongs in every serious reggae collection. “ Right Time’ is probably their most requested song when they perform.

“ Pass the Kouchie” also became an international hit when first released and then again when it was covered by the “ Musical Youth” and released as “Pass the Dutchie”

Tabby, Bunny and Judge have produced over 40 albums in their long career and it would be hard to select just one album as a favorite but if I were asked to pick the definite Mighty Diamonds album I would have to say “ Deeper Roots”. This album proves that the Mighty Diamonds are truly the best in the business.

The trio has toured the world extensively and has a strong following in Europe and Japan as well as in the US. In Jamaica they are forever loved, performing many times at Reggae Sunsplash to the delight of all in attendance.
