On July 12, a fundraiser will take place at the WorldBeat Center to help support runners on the Peace and Dignity Journey, an intercontinental spiritual run that began in Alaska and Tierra del Fuego in May, is passing through hundreds of indigenous communities, and will meet at the Panama Canal in November. The goals of the journey include strengthening and sharing indigenous culture, uniting indigenous peoples, uniting all peoples and thereby fulfilling the prophecy of the Eagle and the Condor.

Five of the core runners, those who are running the entire route, are from San Diego. One strand of the Northern route will join a feeder run arriving from the Mexico-US border in Balboa Park between the World Beat Center and the Centro Cultural de la Raza and from there run to Chicano Park for a public welcoming ceremony, arriving shortly after 5pm.

The fundraiser will feature performers that are immersed in or supportive of indigenous culture in the border region, as well as speakers discussing their experiences as runners in past Peace and Dignity Journeys.

Additional Information:

San Diego Region, California, July 21-27, 2008: Running from Eklutna, Alaska, Peace and Dignity Journeys spiritual runners will arrive in the San Diego Region July 21st and run to Chicano Park on July 23rd for a free community ceremony and celebration 5:00pm-9:30pm. This is an intercontinental event that links countless Indigenous communities before, during, and after the run, cultivating lasting relationships amongst individuals, families, communities, and Nations. The journey travels to a different Indigenous community at least once a day for six months. Thousands of people participate in Peace and Dignity Journeys as runners, supporters, and organizers. Bio:Alpha Blondy, the Rasta of Cocody, was born Sedou Kone in Dimbokoro, Cote d'Ivoire, in 1953. Heavily influenced by the music of Bob Marley, Blondy considered himself a Rasta at an early age. So early, in fact, that he recorded six Reggae tunes while still in his teens. Blondy's parents were so concerned about his devotion to Reggae and the Rasta lifestyle that they committed him to a psychiatric hospital for two years!

Early in 1970 Reggae began to be popular in West Africa and Blondy's popularity grew to the point where, in the early '80s he recorded his first single, Brigidier Sabari. In 1983, he followed with his first album, Jah Glory and began touring all over Africa. It was at this point that Alpha made a pilmrimage to Jamaica to record with The Wailers at Tuff Gong Studios. The results of his efforts were the huge hit album, Cocody Rock, followed by Jerusalem and then Apartheid is Nazism.

Blondy sings in Dioula, English, French, Arabic, and Hebrew. His band, The Solar System, is likewise international, with members hailing from Cameroon, England, France, Ivory Coast, Jamaica, and Togo. Alpha Blondy and The Solar System are tight and hot, and Alpha's status as the premiere African Reggae star is richly deserved.

Artist's Bio:

Mad Professor (born Neil Fraser, 1955, Georgetown, Guyana) is a dub music producer and engineer known for his original productions and remix work. He is considered one of the leading producers of dub music’s second generation and was instrumental in transitioning dub into the digital age. He is a prolific producer, contributuing to or producing nearly 200 albums. He has collaborated with reggae artists such as Lee "Scratch" Perry, Sly and Robbie, Pato Banton, Jah Shaka and Horace Andy, as well as artists outside the realm of traditional reggae and dub, such as Sade, Massive Attack, The Orb, and Brazilian DJ Marcelinho da lua.

Fraser became known as Mad Professor as a boy due to his fascination with electronics. He emigrated from Guyana to London at the age of 13 and later began his music career as a service technician. He gradually collected recording and mixing equipment and opened his own recording studio, Ariwa Sounds, in the living room of his home in the Thornton Heath section of London in 1979. He began recording lovers rock bands and vocalists for his own label and recorded his first album after moving the studio to a new location in 1982. He teamed up with reggae legend Lee "Scratch" Perry for the first time in 1989 for the album Mystic Warrior.[1]

Dub music, which combines reggae music and recording studio trickery, seemed to fit Mad Professor's musical and technical tastes perfectly and his early work remained faithful to the traditional Jamaican dub pioneered by King Tubby, Lee "Scratch" Perry, and Augustus Pablo. Mad Professor's early work was characterized by few vocal tracks and heavy echo, reverb, and phaser effects on the instrumentals. Eventually, he began to experiment with electronic sounds and effects alongside the traditional instruments. Synthesized sounds began to find a place in his mixes. This experimentation caught the attention of artists outside of reggae and dub genres and led to Mad Professor's work with electronic artists, most notably Massive Attack. In 2008, he became well-known his highly experimental remix of 'HAPPY ENDING', a song by pop sensation Ayumi Hamasaki. The song was included on her Ayu-mi-x 6 -GOLD- album.

Prezident Brown

Prezident Brown (born: Fitz Albert Cotterell) has been called "one of the most interesting cultural dee-jays since U Roy". Emphasizing positive messages, Brown has continued to pioneer his own direction, developing his own approach to dee-jaying that he calls, "the chanting stylee". Born to a Seventh Day Adventist family in Colonel Ridge, Clarendon, Brown grew up in St. Mary, a small town in the the north coast resort city of Ocrabessa. Although he showed potential as an artist, as a youngster, he was forced to leave school in order to support his mother and three sisters after the death of his father. Brown launched his musical career, at the age of fourteen, when he began dee-jaying for the Sound King Stereo Mix at the Bamboo lounge. Initially known as Junior Ranking, Brown was dubbed "Slim Brown" by dee-jay Nicodemus. When he recorded his debut single, a duet with Chinna, in1988, Brown was named "Dancehall Doctor". The title "Prezident" was bestowed upon him by the late Jack Ruby, producer of Burning Spear's albums, ""Marcus Garvey" and "Man In The Hills". With Ruby overseeing his recordings, Brown enjoyed such hits as "Rough Road", "Brain Food" and "Roots In The Music". Following Ruby's death in 1988, Brown became involved with producers Collins, O'Hare and Stewart of Grove Music. He switched to Cole's label, Roof International, shortly afterwards, and began performing and emceeing at the Rooftop Club. His most successful period came after resuming his partnership with O'Hare in 1989. In 1995, Brown toured the United Kingdom, promoting his debut album, "Big Bad And Talented. ~ Craig Harris, All Music Guide.

Festival Website: http://afrofunk.org

Afrobeat is dense, funky, intricately-layered, groove-heavy music with an intrinsic message – delivered through polyrhythmic beats, the sweat of the dancers, and the power of words. This July, that message will reverberate through California, when the Afrofunk Festival returns after three consecutive years of sold-out shows.

The Afrofunk Festival was born in 2005, when Kenyan singer Victor Sila joined forces with Liberian DJ Jeremiah Kpoh. Cresting the wave of the international Afrobeat revival, which shined a media spotlight on bands like Antibalas and artists like Femi Kuti, the AFF tapped into the vibrancy of the San Francisco Bay Area, the epicenter of the ‘80s World Beat craze and current home to bands like Albino, Kotoja, Aphrodesia, and Sila’s own outfit, the Afro-Funk Experience. The result was a truly unique event with a righteous, humanitarian cause benefiting at-risk youth in famine- and war-torn regions of East Africa.

In the years since, Afrobeat has continued to grow in popularity, while the AFF has become a cultural institution -- not just in the San Francisco Bay Area, but along the West Coast. Now in its fourth year, the AFF (which runs July 9-26) has expanded to venues in Eugene, Seattle, Portland, Ashland, San Luis Obispo, San Diego, Los Angeles, and Santa Barbara. The AFF tour concludes with three consecutive nights at SF’San Francisco's premier live music club, the Independent.

“There’s no way we can stop doing the Afrofunk Festival, as long as the crisis facing children in Africa continues,” says Sila, emphasizing that his mission has always been to raise cultural and social awareness through music.

This year’s lineup stretches the boundaries of Afrofunk, presenting African, Afro-Brazilian and Afro-Latin variants, alongside nu-funk and classic soul. Performers include Sila and the Afrofunk Experience, B-Side Players, Darondo, Nino Moschella, Bayonics, DJ Vanka, Afrobeat Down, Fuga, Rocky Dawuni, Manicato, DJ Felina, Sambada, and DJ Jeremiah with Afrobeat Nation. (Visit http://www.afrofunk.org for a complete list of performers, dates, and venues.)

The Afrofunk Festival is still a party, so bring your dancing shoes, but this is a party with a conscience – and a cause (proceeds will go to House of Hope, an orphanage in Africa that houses children ravaged by famine and disease). Despite international media attention and critically-acclaimed documentaries like Peter Jordan’s Darfur Rising which have increased awareness about the plight of African children, the situation remains grave.

Having spent time in a refugee camp as a youth himself before coming to America, DJ Jeremiah is particularly sympathetic to the struggles of Africa’s children. “This is the best way I know of to focus attention on this important issue. The youth are the future. By helping them, we are giving them the hope for a better life,” he says, adding, “what better medium to get this message across than Afrofunk?”

Discerning critics acknowledge that after "Shakti" the blend of violin and guitar with an additional bonus of Bass guitar is unique to "Ahimsa" which is charting its own distinct course in the mosaic of world music.

Tribo De Jah

Unique"! This is the word most commonly heard when people express their first impression about Tribo de Jah. We still could add"intense", "rare" and many different qualifications to this original Brazilian group. Only who watches them performing could describe the impressive magnetism they express on stage. One very peculiar detail about them is that 5 of the 6 members of the group are blind (one partially and the other four totally). They met each other at the School for the Blind from Sao Luis, capital of the state of Maranhao, in northern Brazil, called the Brazilian Jamaica. Some years later the five met vocalist and broadcaster Fauzi Beydoun, born in Sao Paulo but at that moment returning to Brazil from Ivory Coast, Africa, with the reggae rhythm pounding in his heart. The group then started to mix its 'roots reggae' music with strong political messages, social enlightenment and spiritual love and peace. The band performs a version of reggae that differs from the original Jamaican style, as they use elements of their native Brazilian culture, on what is now lovingly referred to as "Brazilian reggae".

The Children's Village Center in Ethiopia
The mission of the Children’s Village is to provide an environment of hope and opportunity for children who have been discarded by society and their families due to poverty, violence, death, HIV/AIDS and more. The Village provides care and services for street children, orphans and other vulnerable youth – using art, music, nutrition and lots of love to heal the children while providing the tools for a viable future and hopefully creating tomorrow’s leaders
