On July 12, a fundraiser will take place at the WorldBeat Center to help support runners on the Peace and Dignity Journey, an intercontinental spiritual run that began in Alaska and Tierra del Fuego in May, is passing through hundreds of indigenous communities, and will meet at the Panama Canal in November. The goals of the journey include strengthening and sharing indigenous culture, uniting indigenous peoples, uniting all peoples and thereby fulfilling the prophecy of the Eagle and the Condor.

Five of the core runners, those who are running the entire route, are from San Diego. One strand of the Northern route will join a feeder run arriving from the Mexico-US border in Balboa Park between the World Beat Center and the Centro Cultural de la Raza and from there run to Chicano Park for a public welcoming ceremony, arriving shortly after 5pm.

The fundraiser will feature performers that are immersed in or supportive of indigenous culture in the border region, as well as speakers discussing their experiences as runners in past Peace and Dignity Journeys.

Additional Information:

San Diego Region, California, July 21-27, 2008: Running from Eklutna, Alaska, Peace and Dignity Journeys spiritual runners will arrive in the San Diego Region July 21st and run to Chicano Park on July 23rd for a free community ceremony and celebration 5:00pm-9:30pm. They will depart July 27th from El Centro continuing their journey to Quechan territory in Yuma, Arizona and ultimately their final destination Panama City, Panama on November 13, 2008.

Peace and Dignity Journeys organizes spiritual runs every four years that start simultaneously in Alaska, USA and Tierra del Fuego, Argentina and culminates at the Panama Canal, Panama City, Panama. This is an intercontinental event that links countless Indigenous communities before, during, and after the run, cultivating lasting relationships amongst individuals, families, communities, and Nations. The journey travels to a different Indigenous community at least once a day for six months. Thousands of people participate in Peace and Dignity Journeys as runners, supporters, and organizers. Each community stop represents and recreates sacred insight and healing that come from having been part of such a vast linkage of traditions and communities.
